OMNI-KAP™ Waste Solidification Powder

OMNI-KAP™ is a dry powder solidification cement that may be added to any water containing toxic sludge to rapidly set to a strong easily handled solid stone-like substance. Initial sets are from 30 minutes to 4 hours. In most cases, OMNI-KAP™ solidified wastes meet EPA compaction requirements for earth burial.

Sludge and other wastes to be solidified must have a pH of 6 or higher prior to mixing. The adjustment of pH may be made with any common alkali either monovalent (soda ash, etc.) or divalent (lime, etc.) Minimum water contents of 30% are required for OMNI-KAP™ reaction. However, the higher the waste solids, the less OMNI-KAP™ will be required to bring to a given strength characteristic. We do not recommend the use of more than minimal amounts of polymeric flocculants in settling sludges to be solidified with OMNI-KAP™ as they entrain air and lower final strengths and insolubilities.

A general rule is to use from 25% to 50% OMNI-KAP™ on the total weight of the settled sludge. The more OMNI-KAP™ used the higher the compressive strength, lower the permeability and lower water extractables. Higher ranges of OMNI-KAP™ will encapsulate and insolubilizes lime precipitated plating wastes to a point where they will pass the EPA extraction test for ordinary landfill burial. (Sanitary landfill).

Mixing may be accomplished with propeller type stirrers (1,500 rpm range), mortar mixers, pumps or static mixers. A two to 5 minute stir is usually sufficient. Complete dispersion is a must! Care should be exercised to avoid gelling or rapid initial set in batch mixing. Cleanings between mixes may be required. The mixed waste may be simply dumped on the ground or into suitable containers to set prior to final disposition. Set wastes have low permeability’s and solubility’s and with sufficient OMNI-KAP™ will meet all PA requirements for land burial.

When encapsulated with OMNI-KAP™, many highly combustible organics burn quietly and at a controlled rate. Liquid or semi liquid water insoluble wastes m ay be first emulsified using a nonionic surfactant to 50% to 60% solids before OMNI-KAP™ is added. The OMNI-KAP™ cementing reaction requires water to set. Buffering and emulsion stabilization may also be required for best results. Often, the use of OMNI-KAP™ alone will not completely insolubilizes a toxic or hazardous waste. When this is the case the use of OMNI-FIX™ is indicated. Please contact our technical service department for specific recommendations. The use of OMNI-FIX™ or OMNI-KAP™ does not automatically allow for the indiscriminate disposal of wastes. Written approval from the appropriate governmental agency is required before disposal of any waste.

Specifications:

OMNI-KAP™ is slightly caustic and care should be taken to prevent skin and eye contact. Gloves and goggles should be worn. Wash off skin immediately. Flush out eyes with water. OMNI-KAP™ dusts should not be inhaled. Wear a suitable OSHA/NIOSH respirator for caustic dusts. OMNI-KAP™ should not be taken internally. In case of accidental ingestion , call a doctor immediately! Treatment is for lime and fluorides. Induce vomiting. While relatively nontoxic, OMNI-KAP™ should be handled with care appropriate to all industrial chemicals.
